The Original Maine Whoopie Pie – Our Story

Maine’s Original Whoopie Pie – Since 1925

The Beginning

It all started in 1925 inside a small brick bakery on Lincoln Street in Lewiston, Maine. Back then, Labadie’s Bakery was the neighborhood spot for fresh bread, pastries, and conversation. One afternoon, something new came out of the oven — two soft chocolate cakes with a smooth layer of sweet cream between them. Nobody knew it then, but that little treat would become a Maine classic: the whoopie pie.

Nearly a century later, we still bake them the same way. We mix our batter from scratch every morning, bake in small batches, and hand-fill each one right here in Lewiston. No buttercream, no shortcuts, no preservatives — just real cocoa, buttermilk, flour, sugar, and a touch of vanilla. Simple ingredients, done the right way.

Rooted in Maine

Labadie’s has always been part of Lewiston’s story. For generations, families have stopped by to grab a warm box of whoopies to take home or send to someone they love. We’re proud to keep that tradition going — same recipe, same spirit, same Maine roots. Our orders may travel all over the country now, but every single whoopie pie still starts right here on Lincoln Street.

From Local Favorite to Maine Tradition

Over the years, our whoopie pies made their way far beyond Lewiston. Visitors took them home, shared them with friends, and spread the word about the original Maine whoopie pie. Today, Labadie’s ships coast to coast, bringing a little bit of Maine nostalgia to birthdays, holidays, and everyday moments everywhere.

Why We’ve Lasted So Long

We’re not a big factory and we don’t mass-produce. We’re a small Maine bakery doing things the old-fashioned way because that’s how great things taste. Each whoopie pie that leaves our ovens is packed by hand, sealed fresh, and sent out with pride. Our bakers know every step matters — from the smoothness of the batter to the perfect swirl of cream. It’s unmistakably Labadie’s.

Experience the Original

Labadie’s Bakery is the birthplace of Maine’s whoopie pie and one of the oldest family-run bakeries still operating in the state. A lot has changed since 1925, but our commitment to quality, community, and tradition hasn’t. Taste what nearly a century of practice has perfected.
