The Original Maine Whoopie Pie – Our Story

Maine’s Original Whoopie Pie – Since 1925

It all began in 1925 inside a small bakery on Lincoln Street in Lewiston, Maine. Back then, Labadie’s Bakery was a neighborhood spot where families came for bread, pastries, and conversation. One afternoon, a new creation came out of the oven — two soft chocolate cakes sandwiched around a generous layer of sweet cream filling. Nobody knew it at the time, but that dessert would become a Maine legend: the whoopie pie.

Almost one hundred years later, we’re still baking whoopie pies the same way. We mix our batters fresh each morning, bake in small batches, and hand-fill every pie right here in Lewiston. There are easier ways to do it, but not better ones. Our recipe hasn’t changed because it doesn’t need to — real cocoa, buttermilk, sugar, flour, and just the right touch of vanilla. No shortcuts, no preservatives, no frozen batter. Just simple, honest ingredients and a century of practice.

Rooted in Maine

Labadie’s has always been part of the fabric of Lewiston. Generations of local families grew up stopping by our storefront, grabbing a warm box of whoopies to take home or send to friends. We’re proud to carry on that Maine tradition — the same recipe, the same bakery spirit, and the same sense of community. While our orders now travel nationwide, every whoopie pie still starts here in the heart of Maine.

From Local Favorite to National Tradition

Over the decades, word spread far beyond Lewiston. Visitors took boxes home, shared them across the country, and passed along the story of “the original Maine whoopie pie.” Today, Labadie’s ships coast to coast, bringing a taste of Maine nostalgia to birthdays, holidays, and special occasions everywhere. Each box carries nearly a century of baking history — proof that simple traditions never go out of style.

Why We’ve Lasted So Long

We’re not a factory. We’re not mass-produced. We’re a small Maine bakery doing things the old-fashioned way because that’s how great things taste. Every whoopie pie that leaves our ovens is packed by hand, sealed for freshness, and sent out with pride. Our bakers know every step matters — from the smoothness of the batter to the swirl of cream that makes every bite unmistakably Labadie’s.

Experience the Original

Labadie’s Bakery is the birthplace of Maine’s whoopie pie and one of the oldest family-run bakeries still operating in the state. A lot has changed since 1925, but our commitment to quality, community, and tradition hasn’t. Taste what nearly a century of practice has perfected.
